October 2 is designated as National Batik Day. This decree became a form of national celebration for the Indonesian people after UNESCO declared batik a Humanitarian Heritage for Oral and Intangible Culture (Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity) on October 2 2009.

Like the various batik motifs, the celebration of National Batik Day also has meaning as a symbol of unity over the diversity of the archipelago and a form of appreciation for batik as the work of the nation's children and a cultural heritage that must be preserved.
